Changing careers
I have been an office worker for about 10 years and simply had enough, mate from my CRICKET team said he would take me on as a painter and decorator, train me up and then either I can continue to work for his firm or go alone.

Wise move? Or am I being mad?

Prospects in the office job?

Re: Changing careers
Presumably you're sick to death of the mundane office environment and want to work for yourself, out and about with different locations.

One hell of a change, but I'd go for it

If your arms are long enough, go for it. I would.

Re: Changing careers
My MATE is a P&D... had his own firm a few times but always ended up winding it up... tough game now with the Poles... he's making a living but only because he knows a LOT of people and gets work through contacts... reckons if he was starting off now he'd have no chance.

Re: Changing careers
id say generally its a half decent move woody son, but id move towards a bit more of an established trade if possible like a sparks or a plumber, obviously will take longer to train etc

You're not really asking us are you Woody? You know in your heart of hearts what you want to do. So do it. It's never too late to change career. Or stay where you are.

Re: Changing careers
in October i'm gonna start taking my level 3 diploma so i can set myselt up as a personal trainer. just on the side to begin with but if it works then i can stop making £££ for other people and make some for myself.

Re: Changing careers
Be aware with plumbing Woody, it can be working in awkward positions for long periods and do damage to knees and backs.

Hopefully your are a shortarse, i also hear this British Gas boiler maintenance blokes don't get a terrible gig, but i could be wrong on that.

Re: Changing careers
Why not something office based but in and around Cricket? Place's like the oval need staff, better paid that most basic office jobs and work on site.

Re: Changing careers
Woody, try to tack on plastering skills and basic carpentry (eg door frames and skirting boards) as this goes hand in hand with P&D.

P&D alone might not be enough these days.

Re: Changing careers
No idea how much my letting Agents added ''on top'' but judging by the invoice for painting an average sized 3 bed house in Essex I would say go for it.

P.S Painters did the job in under 3 days according to neighbours invoiced 1300 top to bottom repaint of walls only all one colour as requested by tenants.

Re: Changing careers
do bear in mind that youre going to be competing with eastern europeans who quote 80 quid a day. That puts you not far off minimum wage territory. plus there's the prospect of outside work i the winter.

Re: Changing careers
Get a visa, Woody and join the Deadliest Catch crew. 1 week a years worth of work and you get paid enough to cover the year. It means going to Alaska though and there's a reasonable chance of death, if that sort of thing bothers you.

Failing that, I have been made aware of mining jobs that are going in Australia. Great pay too. Only you're in the Australian Outback and there's a reasonable chance of death, if that sort of thing bothers you.

Re: Changing careers
Woody, being serious here, if you want to change career listen to the advice that someone who owned a yacht gave me years ago. there's a job called a marine refrigeration engineer. doesnt seem too difficult to get qualified and you either work on cruise ships for about 3 grand a month tax free or youre land based and get helicoptered out to private yachts whos refrigeration have failed in which case you earn mega money.
